GUDFINNA KRISTIN BURGESS (published on May 02, 2009)

GUDFINNA KRISTIN BURGESS (THORSTEINSSON) Peacefully, on April 30, 2009, passed away at the age of 84. Kristin was born in Akranes, Iceland on February 7, 1925. She came to Canada with her parents and brother at the age of four months. Kristin was raised in Arborg, MB and moved to Winnipeg in 1943 where she later met and married a young sailor, Alex Burgess. Kristin was predeceased by her loving husband Alexander, her parents Gudrun and Sigurdur, her stepfather Gunnbjorn, and her brothers, Jacob and Tobias. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Bruce (Linda), Kristin Bjurman (Trevors) and Glen; her grandchildren, David (Bonnie), Brian Burgess, Peter, Ryan, Daniel and Natalie Bjurman. Kristin also leaves her new great-grandchild, Ethan Alexander Burgess. She will also be dearly missed by her many friends from her banking days, her church, her club (Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans #283) and especially her good friend Ron. After coming to Winnipeg she met her dear, and lifelong friend, Mildred Brent (Krawchuk). The two young women lived together and later double dated with their future husbands. Mom met Dad one evening on a night out at the Winnipeg roller rink when Dad literally picked' her up. Mom's other two great loves were traveling and friends. She fulfilled many of her dreams of travel by visits to her homeland of Iceland (several times), touring the Middle East, the Far East, Spain, Portugal, Alaska and much of Canada and the U.S.A. Mom also learned to pilot a plane after her retirement from the Bank of Montreal, at age 65. She was active in the A.N.A.F. until a few years ago when her health slowed her down. While with the A.N.A.F. she made many, many friends. The family would like to thank her friends for their support, her Home Care workers (particularly Shirley and Holly), the nursing staff at the Grace Hospital, (Laurie, Joanne, Mandy and especially Wendy). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Mom's favorite charities (Lupus Society, Kidney Foundation, Cancer Foundation) or a charity of your choice. Funeral service will be held at First Lutheran Church of Winnipeg, 580 Victor Street (Between Ellice and Sargent), Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Ave. After the burial a luncheon will be served at the Army, Navy, and Air Force Club at 3584 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. Chapel Lawn 885 - 9715
