JAMES DOUGLAS PAWSEY (published on May 02, 2009)

JAMES DOUGLAS PAWSEY Peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at St. Boniface Hospital, Jim Pawsey passed away at the age of 64 years. He is survived by his daughters, Kimberley and Andrea Pawsey; brother Eric Pawsey (Maria) of Montreal; sister Janet Brown of Montego Bay, Jamaica; and sister Helen Cheung (Wayne) of Winnipeg. He is also survived by five nephews, a niece, and four great-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Earle and Marjorie Pawsey of Montreal, and brother-in-law Christopher Brown of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Jim was born in London, England, on November 18, 1944, to an English war bride and a Canadian soldier. The family moved to Canada when he was a young child and settled in Montreal, Quebec. In his youth, Jim excelled in many sports, and for several years he was the star pitcher of a fastball league. He had a sharp mind and a quick humorous wit. Like all members of the Pawsey family, Jim loved to play cards. He was our best bridge player. He was analytical, resourceful and always independent-minded. Jim transferred to Winnipeg in the early 1970s to serve with the Hudson's Bay Company, Northern Stores Division, rising to the position of senior accountant. When Jim received his diagnosis of cancer, he faced this challenge with a quiet, dignified bravery. His life-long faith guided and sustained him right to the end. A memorial service will take place on May 4, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., Ness Avenue Baptist Church, 2700 Ness Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E OV9. Mosaic Funeral, Cremation and Cemetery Services in care of arrangements, 275-5555.
