DAN SMITH (published on May 06, 2009)

DAN SMITH It is with great sadness the family of Daniel Edward Smith announces his passing at the age of 85 years on May 3, 2009. He is survived by brothers Vernon and wife Betty of Winnipeg and William (Bill) of Calgary, sister-in-law Gladys of Winnipeg, two nephews, five nieces and several great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred Edward and Emily May Smith and his brother James (Jim). Dan was a member of Beaver Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and Khartum Shrine Centre where he enjoyed membership in the Vintage Car Unit and the Khartum Komedians. In 1982 Dan retired from his Ticket Kiosk at Portage and Main Concourse where he had made many friends and acquaintances. After his retirement he became well known among the disabled community as a volunteer on a full-time basis for the Manitoba League of Persons With Disabilities and the Independent Living Resource Centre. Dan's efforts as a volunteer were recognized when he became a recipient of Canada Volunteer Award Certificate of Merit in 1995 and the National Access Awareness Provincial Achievement Award in 1997. A celebration of his life will be held at a memorial service at the Masonic Memorial Temple at 420 Corydon Avenue (Confusion Corner) Winnipeg on Friday, May 8, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a donation may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, care of Khartum Shrine Centre, 1155 Wilkes Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3P 1B9.
