JAMES (JIM) E. GRAY (published on May 09, 2009)

JAMES (JIM) E. GRAY 1924 - 2009 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of James Everett Gray in his sleep on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. Jim passed away at Vista Park Lodge in Winnipeg. Remaining to forever cherish his memory are daughter Linda Buechler (Garry); son Bill (Lori); grandchildren, Chris, Kyle and Steve; sister-in-law Hedi Chambers; brother-in-law Frank Schmidt; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by Theresa, his wife of 57 years; his parents Florence and Bill; sister Barbara Maconnell and infant brother Stanley. A lifelong Winnipegger, Jim was raised in the north end, served as a mechanic in the air force during the Second World War and then married his high school sweetheart on June 14, 1947. He followed in his family's footsteps, working for MTS, first as a carpenter and then as a building inspector until his retirement in 1983. Once retired, he started his second career with the Telephone Pioneers at their Norwood facility. He enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, cards and weekends at Lester Beach, but was always most comfortable with a sheet of sandpaper in his hands. Later in life he turned to carving and painting and entertaining friends with his vast repertoire of jokes. There was always a new project to keep him busy. In 2006 he moved into Dakota House to be closer to family and there he met a very special group of friends who gave him a new lease on life. In compliance with Jim's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. The family would like to invite family and friends to join us in a reception in celebration of Jim's life Monday, May 11 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in The Meadowood United Church, 1111 Dakota Street. A private family interment will follow at a later date. Jim and his family would like to thank all of the health care professionals, too many to mention, that he has dealt with since his diagnosis in June 2008. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations can be made in Jim's memory to the Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 0R3 or a charity of choice.
