IDA THOMPSON (published on May 09, 2009)
IDA THOMPSON (nee WONNECK) It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ida Thompson, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, after a long battle with cancer, on May 4, 2009. Ida was predeceased by her husband Alfred and son Brian. She is survived by her son Ken (Wendy) of Medicine Hat, Alberta, daughter Diane (Ron) Evans of Winnipeg, daughter-in-law Lori of Winnipeg, and son David of Grand Forks, North Dakota; grandsons Chad and Ryan, granddaughters Julie and Kristie; sister Nora (Ron) Gunson of Kelowna, brother Arvid (Margaret) of Winnipeg, sister Elsie Reimer of Winnipeg; as well as many nieces and nephews. Ida was born on December 8, 1929, in the R.M. of Hanover, Manitoba, to Daniel and Alwine Wonneck. Ida married Alfred Thompson on October 20, 1951. They farmed in the Silver Plains district north of Morris, where they resided until 1997. They then moved to Morris and enjoyed their retirement years in the Rebecca Cove apartment community. Ida was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She will always be remembered for her quiet demeanour and kindness. Ida always had a reputation for being an excellent cook and was well-known for the large lunches and meals that she would always prepare, seemingly in an instant, for any visitors who came over. Ida was always the happiest when she had guests in her home to visit with. She truly enjoyed people's company and always liked playing cards, scrabble, and other games. While she was both on the farm and living in Morris, another favourite pastime was vegetable gardening. During her retirement years, Ida also enjoyed travelling throughout Southern Manitoba, North Dakota, and Minnesota, to attend dances and polka fests. If friends and family so desire, donations may be made in memory of Ida to the Canadian Cancer society. Funeral services for Ida will be held on Monday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Morris, with the Reverends Ed Mitchler and Norris Nordin officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Southern Manitoba Convention Centre. Burial will be at the Morris Cemetery at a later date.
