PETER RICHARDSON (published on May 09, 2009)

PETER RICHARDSON It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Peter Richardson on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the Pine Falls Health Complex at the age of 77. Peter is survived by his soul mate of 37 years, Sharon Mignon; his children, Pam, Perry, Paul and Preston (Brenda) and his grandchildren Preston Jr., Shannon and DeAnna. He is also survived by his brothers, Donald and Brian (Annick) and his sisters, Lillian, Betty, Ann (Al), Kathleen, Joyce, Joan (Winston), Patricia (Horace), Frances and Diane (Tom). He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Mary and his brother John (Jake). Peter was born and raised in the Pine Falls - Powerview area. He was employed in the newsprint industry and retired from Abitibi Price Inc. as a pipefitter foreman in August 1990. He was an avid gardener and spent many hours in his yard tending to his garden and flowers. In his younger years he was very involved with baseball and coached the Powerview Pats . He also enjoyed golfing and fishing. Peter was a Life Member of the Pine Falls Bowling League and was presented with a special plaque in May 2008 to honour his 60 years of continuous participation in the bowling league and his many years of service on the bowling executive. Due to health reasons, he had to start bowling with his left hand a few years back. He always managed to make his average and really appreciated the support and encouragement he received from the bowlers. He also started the Northeastern Annual Bowling Tournament which will be celebrating 50 years next year. Peter was a very dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion Pine Falls Br. #64 and was instrumental in the building of our new Legion clubrooms. He served on the Legion executive in several capacities and was given a Life Membership in September 1992. Peter received the Meritorious Service Medal from the Legion in November 1997 for his outstanding and dedicated service. He was also a member of the 46th Field Squadron Militia Unit. Peter spent many hours canning the vegetables from his garden and was so pleased when he took first place for his dill pickles at the Horticultural Show that used to be held in Pine Falls. Anyone who visited his home always left with an armful of home canning. He also enjoyed smoking fish in his spare time. He would make homemade soups and would end up feeding the Rock area neighbourhood. Peter was an avid Blue Jays fan and he coached them through many games and enjoyed betting with his next door neighbour Dolly during the playoffs. He also enjoyed playing cards with friends and neighbours and kept the games very lively. A very important part of Peter's life was the time he spent with his dogs, Buttons, Bingo and Lucky, who departed before him. He will be greatly missed by our dog Dusty who was with her pal when they took their last ride to the post office. Special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff for their efforts towards Peter. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Pine Falls Legion on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with lunch and comradeship to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Peter's memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3.
