ELLEN EASTON MCCOWAN (published on May 16, 2009)



ELLEN EASTON MCCOWAN Ellen passed away peacefully at the age of 102, with family by her side on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, sister, Marjorie and brothers Andrew and Wolverton. Ellen leaves to cherish her memory daughters Norma (Dick), Jean (Harry), Barbara (Michael), nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Ellen was born on January 28, 1907 in Peabody, Ontario. Her family moved to Saskatchewan when she was twelve. Ellen went to Normal School in Regina and became a teacher, starting her career in rural Saskatchewan. At a weekend dance, she met Gordon, the love of her life. Shortly after, they eloped to Moose Jaw and were married on April 22, 1927. After the school year ended in June, they moved to the family farm in Summerberry, Saskatchewan. In 1947 they moved to Estevan where she resumed her teaching career. In 1957 they moved to Winnipeg where she has resided ever since. Ellen continued her teaching career in Winnipeg at Robertson and Harrow Schools until she retired in 1972. After Gordon's passing, Ellen began to travel. She enjoyed many journeys to places around the world. Ellen was always a fitness enthusiast and loved her daily walks. At the age of 90 she joined the local gym and became a local celebrity in the news. Ellen had a very green thumb and enjoyed gardening and nature. She was also an avid Bomber Fan and season ticket holder for many years. Ellen was multi- talented. She was an accomplished artist and author and could recite poems at a moment's notice. She had a great sense of humour and was the first to laugh at herself. Ellen always had a positive outlook and would go with the flow. She was very proud of her family and took an interest in all of their activities. Ellen was an inspiration to her family and everyone that knew her. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staffs at the Riverside Lions Seniors Residence and The Victoria Hospital for their wonderful care. A celebration of her life will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main Street on Wednesday, May 20 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the charity of one's choice.
