FRANCES MILLS The death of Mary Effie Frances Mills occurred on May 19, 2009 at Poseidon Care Home. Frances was born on April 2, 1910 in Swan River, the second daughter of Thomas and Jane Mills. She attended school in Swan River, continued at United College (a member of the class of 1931), and took professional teacher training in Winnipeg. She taught in Osborne, Neelin, Cypress River, Carmen and Swan River. In 1942 she joined the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service: was discharged in 1946. She was awarded (much to the delight of her mother, family and friends), The Member of the British Empire, for the work she did with the Wrens. After discharge she attended Success Commercial College and worked briefly at the Winnipeg General Hospital in a clerical capacity. And from 1949 to retirement was an employee of the Provincial Government. She was a member of and attended Westminster United Church for many years. She was predeceased by her parents, by her sisters Evelyn and Mildred, and her brother Bert, and his wife Helen. Her nephews, Donald Mills, his wife Dorothy, and their children John and Heather; Gordon Mills, his wife Margaret and their children, Kathryn and Frances, survive her. There will be a memorial service at Westminster United Church, Maryland at Westminster on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. and a service of committal in the Swan River Cemetery where her ashes will be interred in the family plot.
