JOSEPHINE HARRIET LUCKIW (published on May 22, 2009)

JOSEPHINE HARRIET LUCKIW (nee PRYSTANSKI) Peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Holy Family Home, our dearly beloved mother Josephine passed away to be with our Lord, Jesus Christ. Mother was predeceased by her husband Stephen, first born daughter, Anna in Winnipeg; parents Anna and Hryhory, brother, John, twin sisters, Nastunia and Marynia of Ukraine; brother, Joseph of Zanesville; sister, Olga of Cleveland, Ohio. Mother will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Helen Koniuck (Albert), Doreen Baddon, of Winnipeg, Marilyn Kelly (William) of Cleveland, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mother was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1914. At the age of 7, she, along with her family returned to reside in povit Radechiv, Ukraine. At the age of 16, her family returned to Winnipeg where she married her husband Stephen. Mother was a very active person, and involved in many activities. She and her husband were owners of two clothing stores on Selkirk Avenue, namely Josephine's and New York Style Shop. Mother traveled extensively but was especially happy to visit with her family in Ukraine twice, after not seeing them for more than 50 years. Mother also enjoyed many hobbies which included oil painting, gardening, embroidery, poetry and music. She loved singing and was a pioneer member of the O. Koshetz Choir where she sang as a soloist during concert events. Mother was an active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League, as well as a member of Holy Family Home Ladies Auxiliary. She also devoted many hours sewing for the Red Cross for which she received awards. Mother took special pride in preparing traditional Ukrainian Christmas and Easter dinners, which all of the family members enjoyed and will always remember. Mother was employed by McLeods in Winnipeg, Higbees in Cleveland and Sears in Polo Park until her retirement. The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Misericordia, and Holy Family Home for the excellent care during her stay. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23 at Holy Family Church, 1001 Grant Ave. with Fr. M. Gnutel officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Josephine's memory to Holy Family Home, 165 Aberdeen Ave. or Holy Family Church, 1001 Grant Ave. We will miss you and love you always, Mother, Baba Josie.
