ANNE MOLLY (AMALIE) SHAKESHAFF (nee MATTES) Anne Shakeshaff, age 91, passed away peacefully at Misericordia Health Centre on Monday, May 11, 2009. Anne was born on September 9, 1917 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the third of six children. She attended Faraday School (1 to 8) and Isaac Newton School (9 to 11). After a three-month course at Success Business College in 1935, she was hired by Stovel Company, a publishing business. In 1938, she was employed as a stenographer at Riddell Stead Chartered Accountant where she worked for 21 years. Anne enjoyed many activities reading, dancing, golfing, bowling and playing cards. Her other talents included knitting, crocheting, tatting and needlepoint. While visiting a friend in New York in 1956, Anne met her future husband. On September 26, 1959, Anne Mattes married Denis Daniel Shakeshaff at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winnipeg. They moved to Yonkers, NY. From 1959 to 1960 Anne worked part-time for a Chartered Accountant in Yonkers. Her boss wanted her to run the company and to name her price, but she declined. Their daughter Linda was born on November 1960, but sadly, she passed away on September 23, 1962. That same year Anne went to work at Sporlan Valve Company in Mount Vernon, NY as the administrative assistant. She retired on July 1, 1973. After 35 years in New York state, they moved to Fargo, ND in November 1994 to be closer to family. Over the years, they travelled to Canada, Wales, Germany, Scotland, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Austria, Malta, Tenerife and later to Texas. Anne and Danny Shakeshaff were married for 45 years. With the sudden death of Anne's husband on July 31, 2005, her niece, Eileen Metz, became her care giver. After several trips between Winnipeg and Fargo, Anne moved to Winnipeg on July 29, 2007. Anne will be remembered for her love of animals, her caring, gentle and understanding manner, her non-judgmental nature and her willingness to help family and friends. Anne is survived by her sister Elsie Kohler (Detroit Lakes, MN), sister-in-law Rose and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents Philipp and Elizabeth, her daughter Linda, her devoted husband Danny, three brothers Jack, Ralph, Philip and sister Wilma. The family wishes to thank: Eileen for her dedication to Aunt Anne during these past few years, the staff at Misericordia Health Centre 5th Floor Cedar Grove, the staff at Victoria General Hospital 5th Floor and the home care givers, Hannah, Sherry, and Emmy. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. with Pastor Kris Taylor officiating. Cremation has taken place.
