LUCY MARY KALID (published on May 23, 2009)

LUCY MARY KALID Born December 15, 1909 in Winnipeg, Lucy Mary Kalid passed away on March 13, 2009 at age 99 after a long life well lived and valiant fight to stay with us. Lucy was predeceased by her husband Tophie in 1968, whom she said spoiled her for any other, her son Robert Charles (Bob) in 2003, her daughter Virginia in 1996, her brothers Louis and Emmanuel, and her sister Margaret. She is survived by her Granddaughter Nancy and her husband Kit, Grandson Bobby and his wife Ramona, Great-Grandchildren Robbie, Kelly and Brett, Nephew Keith Hanna and his wife Marilyn, Niece Louise Aboussafy and Nephew Edmund Aboussafy. Lucy was a loving and devoted Mother and Grandmother. She was a true lady. She loved entertaining and keeping a beautiful home; she was a wonderful cook. Lucy was very independent, living on her own until she was 97, the last 39 years by herself. She was previously an active member of the Lebanese Club, volunteering at Folklorama, and also volunteered at the Manitoba Museum after Tophie's death. Grandma always saw the positive side of things and did not complain when she lost her husband and both children. When her heart began failing in the last two weeks of her life, it did not occur to her that she may be dying, she said that she must have caught a bug. She loved Christmas, Birthdays and other holidays and special occasions and until her declining years took great care in preparing for and celebrating these with her family. Lucy greatly enjoyed her new friends and caregivers at Beacon Hill Lodge, as well as participating in the many events that were scheduled at her new home in that last years of her life. Thanks to everyone at Beacon Hill that provided such wonderful care, companionship, and compassion to Lucy including 6th floor nurses and aides Betty, Hazel, Christina, Darlene, Mennie, Brenda, Patsy, Winnie, Elaine, Toedy and as well as to Nanette in recreation, and Resident Care Coordinators Kerron, Vicki and Joel. Thanks also to Yolanda Smith at WRHA Home Care for her assistance and care during Grandma's last few years of living on her own. Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009 at Assumption Cemetery with reception to follow at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, both at 4000 Portage Avenue. We will miss you forever Grandma.
