JOSEPH IVIN JOHNSTON November 26, 1933 - May 20, 2009 Precious in the sight of the Lord is death of his Saints. Psalms 116:15 The family of Joseph Johnston announces that our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, great-uncle and friend passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at his home in Winnipeg with his loving family praying by his side. Joe was originally from Fisher Bay, Manitoba where he was a commercial fisherman, hunter and trapper. In 1968, Joe and Lena brought their family to Winnipeg and moved to Gilbert Ave. Over the 40 years, Joe and Lena raised all their children, foster sons and daughters and several of the grandchildren in that home. Everybody in Gilbert Park neighbourhood knew him as Grampa Joe. Joe was a welder at New Flyer Industries and retired after 30 years of service in 1998. In 1986, New Flyer took Joe to Amsterdam, Holland in Europe to work for six months and he brought back many stories and gifts. Joe attended the Wide World of Faith Church faithfully for 21 years where he will fondly be remembered playing his guitar and singing hymns to the Lord. Joseph was predeceased by his father, Stanley and his mother, Gertrude; twin sisters, Jennifer and Winifred; brother, William; his daughter, Wilma; and sons, Allen and Raymond. Family remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Lena Johnston and their children, sons: Mel (Fran), Walter (Diane), Gerald (Joni), Jerry; daughters: Velma (Wayne), Darlene (Johnny); Sons: Rick (Ginette) and Conrad (Darlene) and grandchildren he raised: Joseph (Vicki), Clayton, Marcel, Elise, J.J., Dawn, Morley, Clarence, Russell; brothers: Stanford and Allen; sisters: Kathleen (Charlie), Gertrude, Violet, Betty-Ann (Mike) and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. A Prayer Service to celebrate Joe's life will be held on Monday, May 25, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. (noon), with a viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m. Both services will be held at the Wide World of Faith Church, 465 Alexander Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, with Pastor Marvin Simmons officiating. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery. The Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Joseph, Clayton, Ian, Marcel, Jason and Caleb as well as his granddaughters, Lori and Destiny.
