OLIVE ALICIA GRAY (published on May 23, 2009)

OLIVE ALICIA GRAY On Saturday, May 16, 2009, as the sun rose, Mom left us to embark on her new journey, following a lengthy battle with kidney failure. Her final few hours were spent in the loving company of her daughters Alison and Elaine. Although Mom's illness made her frail, she possessed strength and perseverance, with the ability to try to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges for us, her family. With her courage, she led us to believe that each day was a blessing and an opportunity to create moments. Through her teachings about life, we were able to create wonderful memories which will, as time passes, put the smiles back on our faces when we again recall her special sayings and relive some special events without hearts breaking and tears flowing. We are so proud of her valiant efforts. Mom is survived by her daughters, Alison Chester (Rockie) and Elaine Rawsthorne (Lee); her grandsons Jason (Tresa and Cassie) Sean and Dusty and her great-grandsons Cody, Tyler and Brennan. She will be sadly missed by her dear friend and longtime companion, Chuck Spalding. Mom leaves behind her special care givers Paulette, Abu and Nathaniel who provided the much needed care for our mother. They were very kind to her and always had a smile for her, which she appreciated more than you will ever know...thank you. We also want to thank Jeanne and Marion at the Peritoneal Dialysis Clinic who made Mom feel so special whenever she came for her appointments. Words cannot express our gratitude to nurse Judy for her compassionate care during Mom's final hours. We will always hold a special place in our hearts for her nephrologist, Dr. Martina Reslerova, whose honesty, dedication and support will forever be appreciated as we continue on with our lives without our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom is now with Dad, George Gray, who passed away on August 19, 1977 and her granddaughter, Alison Irene, who passed away on November 29, 1980. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Mom's life will be this summer when she will be able to feel the warmth of the sun, hear the birds sing and the laughter in the voices of those she held so dear. Thank you God for our mother, our friend. Although Mom was not a candidate for kidney transplant, we ask that you sign your donor card. In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted at The Kidney Foundation of Canada, 1-452 Dovercourt Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3Y 1G4, or a charity of your choice.
