MARY FRANCES MALMGREN (published on June 09, 2009)

MARY FRANCES MALMGREN (nee LYONS) 1918 - 2009 Peacefully in her sleep, on Thursday, June 4th, 2009 at Riverview Health Centre, Mary passed away at the age of 90. Mary is lovingly remembered by her two daughters Carol (Wayne) and Donna; her grandchildren Whitney, Hilary and Ethan Bohn, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Pearl Lyons, her twin sister Eileen in 1974, and her husband Harvey in 2000. Mary was born on November 7, 1918 in Edmonton, Alberta. She grew up in Winnipeg and attended St. Mary's Academy, where she graduated from the music program in grade 12. As a young woman, Mary was actively involved at Grace United Church, both in youth activities and duet piano playing with her sister. Mary and Eileen were both accomplished pianists, attaining their ACTM from the Toronto Conservatory of Music and several awards. In 1942 Mary married a young naval officer, Harvey Malmgren, who was the love of her life for 57 years. Their early married life was spent in Toronto where Mary worked in a bank and Harvey was employed in the Navy. They later moved back to Winnipeg where Harvey started up Malmgren Mfg., a farm machinery manufacturing company, with his father and three brothers. When their two daughters were born, Mary stayed home to raise her family. Many years later, Mary's family grew to include three grandchildren, of whom she was very proud and loved dearly. Mary was a true lady. She had impeccable manners, good taste and a sense of style. She was a wonderful cook and entertainer, hosting many family get-togethers and parties over the years. With Harvey, the family, and many friends, she enjoyed years of boating on Lake Winnipeg and Northern Harbour on the family boats: the Chipewyan, the Buccaneer, the Carodon and later in life, the Nancy Gail. The family extends our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Riverview Health Centre, AB 2 and CD1, where Mom lived for seven years. Thank you for the exceptional care and compassion you showed our mother day after day for so many years. You are truly the best. A memorial service will be held for Mary on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Private interment to follow at Waverley Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mary's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba Inc., 10 - 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
