CHRYSANT (CHRYS) WSEWOLOD IWANCHUK, QC With great sadness the family announces the sudden passing of Chrys Iwanchuk on June 4, 2009 at the Health Sciences Centre. He was predeceased by his mother Jaroslawa Iwanchuk. He is survived by his wife Cecilia Dela Cruz; his father Iwan Iwanchuk; his sons Andre (Karen), Ilyan (Andrea), and grandson Nathan; his sister, Christine Walker and niece Katrina (Jeff); his wife's children Rodelio, Romano and grandchildren Jordan and Taliyah, Carol (Sanne), and Cherry and granddaughter Sileyah. Chrys will be dearly missed by all of his family, by Cecilia's brothers and sisters, as well as his countless friends, clients and colleagues. Chrys was born on July 23, 1943 in Sokal, Ukraine to parents Iwan and Jaroslawa Iwanchuk. He immigrated to Canada in 1948 with his parents, and settled in Winnipeg. He graduated from Sisler High School, and later from the University of Manitoba with a BA (1965) and LLB (1968). He began his professional career as a Crown attorney for the Province of Manitoba, and later became a defense lawyer. He was honoured with the title of Queen's Counsel in 1996. He continued to practice law for over 40 years, helping countless individuals and families. Chrys was very active in the Ukrainian community. In his youth he was a member of the Ukrainian scouting organization (PLAST), and served on the executive of the Ukrainian Canadian Students Union (SUSK). Later he was a member of the Osvita Foundation, the Ukrainian Cultural and Education Centre, and the Ukrainian Professional and Business Foundation. He also served on the civil liberties committee of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. In 2004, he was selected by the Canadian government to monitor the free democratic election in Ukraine. Lamay for close family and friends will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 12:00 midnight on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at the Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, with Rev. Sarcie officiating. Prayers (Panakhyda) will be sung at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sts. Vladimir and Olga, 115 McGregor Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, also at the Cathedral. Interment for family will follow at All Saints Cemetery on June 13, with Rt. Reverend Mitrat Buyachok and Rev. Mostivsky officiating. Pall bearers are Wallace Chubaty, Rene Dela Cruz, Brian Evans, Boy Gali, Charles Miklovich, Gordon Prysizney, Edgar Ihor Stolar, and Nick Trusewych. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, The League of Ukrainian Canadians, or CancerCare Manitoba. Expressions of sympathy may be made at VICHNAYA PAMYAT
