HELEN CAROLINE SOKULSKI (published on June 13, 2009)

HELEN CAROLINE SOKULSKI It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Sokulski announce her passing, surrounded by her loves ones, on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at East Gate Lodge, Beausejour, MB. Helen was a proud and loving mother to her children, Dennis (Carol) and Sandra (Art); loving grandmother to grandchildren, Craig (Toni), Lisa (Lincoln) and Miles; loving great-grandmother to great-grandchildren, Hannah, Jack, Carter and Will and is survived by her eldest sister Lily. She was predeceased by husbands, Daniel in 1978 and Victor in 2008; sisters, Erma and Clara; brothers, George, John, Albert, Eddie, Joe and Jack. Helen was born in Hodgson, MB to parents, John and Elizabeth Hamrlik. Her early years were spent on the family farm where she learned the value of hard work and fostered her passion for life. Her zest for life extended into the wide variety of activities of which she partook. She had a love of music fostered by her siblings and learned to play a variety of musical instruments. Helen maintained a life-long love of curling and was very proud of her life membership at the Lac du Bonnet Curling Club. Curling blended with a new found love of travel as she attended several Silver Broom Championships. Into retirement Helen and Victor continued to travel extensively combining travel with support of their beloved Toronto Blue Jays. Never ones to be idle, Helen and Victor embraced cross-country skiing and golf into their busy routines. Mom was an enthusiastic gardener, parlaying the bounty into freezing and canning as seasons progressed. She loved to pick strawberries and spring saw the annual pilgrimage to local strawberry farms to pick pails of fresh berries for the family. Mom had a reputation as an excellent cook and baker. She was famous for her particular variety of vinatarta, lovingly prepared over a number of days and for her wonderful homemade buns a family favourite. Many treasured memories of Mom will be forever remembered by her family and friends. A special thank you is extended to the staff of East Gate Lodge in Beausejour for their excellent care and compassion afforded Helen during her stay. At Helen's request, cremation has taken place, a memorial service for Helen and Victor will be held at the Lac du Bonnet Legion on Friday, June 19 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jake Doell officiating. Donations in Helen's memory may be made to East Gate Lodge, Box 1690, Beausejour, MB R0E 0C0 or the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. AFTERGLOW I'd like the memory of me To be a happy one, I'd like to leave an afterglow Of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo Whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times And bright sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve To dry before the sun, Of happy memories that I leave When life on earth is done.
