FERELITH SHIACH (published on June 23, 2009)
FERELITH SHIACH (nee CULBERT) Peacefully, in the early morning of June 21, 2009, our beloved wife, mother and nana passed away at the Riverview Health Centre. Ferelith was born in Boissevain, Manitoba on July 27, 1921 to Arthur and Jean Culbert who predeceased her in 1978 and 1972. She was the youngest of six children and was predeceased by her sister Jean (Dr. James McLeod), her brother Fred (Margaret), her sister Ruth (Lanktree Thompson), her brother Milton (Ruby), and her brother Douglas (Mary). Ferelith is survived by her loving husband Spence after 66 years of happy marriage; son Bob, daughter-in-law Colleen and granddaughter Kathryn of Smithers, BC; son Don, daughter-in-law Georgie and grandchildren Kristin, Allison and Katie; daughter Cathy, son-in-law Neil Feir and grandchildren Nancy and Jeffrey. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces, including Carol Cox (John) and Joan Waytowich (Ted) of Winnipeg, and Doug Culbert (Joan) of St. Albert, Alberta. Ferelith's favourite pastimes were paddling, golf, curling and playing bridge. She became known as Foo to her friends in paddling during her early years and the nickname stuck for life. She golfed for many years with Spence at Elmhurst Golf Club. Foo was a past president and honourary life member of the Fort Rouge Ladies Curling Club. She was proud to represent her curling club in many provincial competitions. Her friends and family will always remember her infectious laugh and her vivacious personality. Her greatest pride and joy were her children and her grandchildren, and she was very proud of their exploits in sports and academics. Nana and Papa could always be seen at the grandchildren's events. In recent years Ferelith has suffered from Alzheimer's disease and since October, 2001, has been cared for at the Riverview Health Centre. We are extremely grateful to the staff at Riverview, particularly those on A2 whose care and concern knew no bounds. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 26, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Riverview Health Centre in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ferelith's name to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation, One Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 2P4.
