RITA MARIE SMITH (published on July 04, 2009)

RITA MARIE SMITH It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of our cherished mother, Rita Smith. Mum passed peacefully on July 1, 2009. She was blessed with a full, healthy and happy life of 86 years. Left to treasure her memory are her sister Bette (Colin) Sutherland; her children Donna (Orval) Charbonneau, Marie Walmsley (Horst Schindler), Bert (Linda) Smith and Beverly (Peter) Defehr; her eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband William R. Smith and her sister Doreen Cook. Mum was born on March 27, 1923 to Fern and Russell Hicks. She grew up in Pilot Mound, MB where she had many fond childhood memories. Her first job was with Manitoba Telephone System where she met and married Dad, moving from Winnipeg to Vancouver and later back to Winnipeg to raise their four children. Subsequently, she was employed at the Children's Aid Society, The Bay and the law firm of Thompson, Dorfman and Sweatman. Through work she formed lasting friendships. Her most recent home at Lindenwood Terrace brought her new friends both with the residents and staff and many pleasant times. She took pride in volunteering in the library there. She took great pleasure from her flowers on her balcony. She also was a long time member of Norwood United Church and the UCW women's circle. Mum was very proud of her family and made many sacrifices to provide opportunities for them. She took special delight in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She took pleasure in having all the family for Sunday dinners. Mum was a quiet person who had a love for music and learned to play the piano at an early age. She enjoyed knitting for family and charities. Her afghans will be treasured by all of her family. She enjoyed tracing the genealogy of her family and sharing the family tree. She was fortunate to travel extensively including trips to Arizona, Salt Lake City, California, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Scotland, Spain, Portugal, British Columbia, Edmonton and the Maritimes. In later years she enjoyed hosting us at her trailer at Idle Wheels campground near Gimli. Thank you to the emergency and cardiology staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their professional care and support. Thank you also to extended family and friends for their thoughts, support and prayers. A celebration of Mum's life will be held on Monday, July 6, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson in the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Cremation has taken place and there will be a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a children's charity such as Rossbrook House, 658 Ross Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 0M1. THOMSON IN THE PARK 925-1120 Send expressions of sympathy to
