ALICE LOUISE ANDREW (published on July 07, 2009)

ALICE LOUISE ANDREW (nee LUKE) October 27, 1916 July 4, 2009 On Saturday, July 4, 2009 Alice, our beloved mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister, aunt and dear friend, peacefully passed away at the Lions Manor Personal Care Centre on Sherbrook Street, at the age of 92 years. Remaining to forever cherish Alice's memory are her children Hugh (Judy), Allan (Dianne) and Mary-Ellen (Len) Hogue; 11 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn and Dorothy; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends, including her Brothers and Sisters of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her parents, Ernie and Annie Luke, husband Gowan Andrew; infant great-grandson Joshua Salazar; brothers William, James, Patrick and Ralph Luke, and sister Margaret Erickson. Mom was born October 27, 1916 to Ernie and Annie Luke and grew up in Norwood, living her entire life in Winnipeg. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Jubilee Chapter No. 27, and was proud and honoured to serve as Worthy Matron in 1956 and Worthy Grand Matron, Grand Chapter of Manitoba in 1969. Our family lovingly referred to Mom as the Grand Poobah . She served in many other offices while still able to be active in the Eastern Star. The Eastern Star Chalet was near and dear to Mom's heart. Mom was an active member of the Windsor Park United Church. Over the last several years Mom was a resident of ArlingtonHaus Assisted Living, then Lions Manor Supportive Housing, and more recently, Lions Manor Personal Care Centre. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the many staff that treated Mom with care, love and respect. Some of Mom's happiest times were spent at the family cottage at Falcon Lake in the 1950's and Caddy Lake since 1961. Family meant everything to Mom. Gatherings created a moment for another wee speech to remind us all how much we were loved. A celebration of Alice's life will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street at Manitoba Avenue. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue. Honourary pallbearers will be grandchildren Allan and Ryan Hopgood, Curtis and Wade Andrew, Brooke Salazar and Derek Hogue. Active pallbearers will be grandchildren Chris and Stephen Andrew, Mark Andrew, Jason and Trevor Hogue and great grandson, Cody Andrew. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom's name to the Eastern Star Chalet, 525 Cathcart St., Winnipeg R3R 0S6 or Lions Manor Personal Care Centre, 320 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg R3B 2W6. I am standing on the seashore. A ship spreads her sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. I stand watching her until she fades on the horizon, and someone at my side says, She is gone! Gone where? The loss of sight is in me, not in her. Just at the moment when someone says, She is gone! there are others watching her coming. Other voices take up the glad shout, Here she comes! And that is dying. - Henry Scott Holland
