ALEXINA (ZENA) CARPENTER (published on July 13, 2009)

ALEXINA (ZENA) CARPENTER 1916 - 2009 In her 93rd year, peacefully and with grace, Zena passed away on July 10. She was born on November 22, 1916. Zena was predeceased by her loving husband Bill, parents William and Elizabeth McGarrol, and sisters Ella, Evelyn, Elizabeth (Bess) and Gladys. Zena is survived by her children Judi Romani (Aldo), Bill Carpenter (Liz), grandchildren, David Romani, Michael Romani (Sandra), Donald Carpenter (Carrie), Janelle Carbert (Chris), great-grandchildren, Aidan, Darien, Isabella and Tristan, sister Ruth McWilliam, brother Roy McGarrol (Mildred), sisters-in-law Vi Carpenter, Betty Carpenter and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Zena was very athletic all her life. As a teenager, she was a member of the Manitoba Speed Skating Association and was an avid bowler, bowling with the Champlain Bowling League for 50+ years. Before her marriage she worked for the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba and during the war years at Eaton's of Canada. On October 12, 1940, Zena and Bill were married Zena was extremely involved in her community joining the Champlain Community Club Ladies Auxiliary and had been an active member of St. Philip's Anglican Church for the last 52 years. In 1957, Zena went to work for the Provincial Government at the Superannuation Board where she worked for 22 years, until her retirement in 1979. Zena was a loving mother, grandmother and grand-grandmother who enjoyed spending quality time with all of her family. Zena was considered a cool grandmother to her four grandchildren always keeping current in the latest sports scores, world issues and was interested in every detail of her grandchildren's lives. As a mother, she was supportive and caring. Mom, Grandma and Great-grandma, you will truly be missed and know that you touched each of our lives in a special way. We love you eternally and our memories of you will be forever held close to our hearts. We take peace in knowing that you are reunited with Dad and your light will shine upon us from heaven. The family would like to thank the homecare workers who faithfully provided care and compassion especially Tracy and Lisa. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip's Anglican Church, 240 Tache Ave. with The Rev. Linda G. Parsons officiating. Handicapped access at rear of church. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg MB, R3C 2B7, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Suite 200-6 Donald Street, Winnipeg MB, R3L 0K6, or a charity of ones choice.
