THOMAS DUGALD CAIRNS (published on July 25, 2009)

THOMAS DUGALD CAIRNS Tom was born on February 22, 1924 in Springfield, Manitoba. He passed away on July 19, 2009 at the Saint Boniface Hospital, at the age of 85, after eight and one-half months in hospital care. Tom grew up in Dugald, Manitoba. Tom was a veteran of the Canadian Air force where he served for four years. He was stationed in Iceland during the Second World War. He worked as a draftsman for Manitoba Hydro in Winnipeg for over 30 years. He married Muriel Eileen Alexander in 1950 and they lived at 924 Waterford Avenue in Winnipeg for 40 years. They had three children and when they were young he took them to the Barracuda Swim Club for many years, cultivating a love of swimming. He enjoyed taking the family to Falcon Lake, Matheson Bay on Lake of the Woods, and downhill skiing. He took the family travelling on road trips throughout western Canada and the Maritimes. In 1970 they drove to Mexico to view the total eclipse of the sun. He took an early retirement so that he could care for Muriel as she suffered with Alzheimer's disease for over 15 years. His interests included astronomy, science, computers, bowling, downhill skiing, travelling, and dancing. The Outlook Club was an important part of his later years, as was the time spent with his special friend Pearl Wladyka. He enjoyed traveling to Europe, Asia, Texas, Hawaii, and on cruises. Tom is survived by his daughter Judy, son-in-law Leo Beelen, and their children Richard, Gina, Tyler, and Chantelle, of BC, his son Don, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and their children Robbie, Melanie, and Michael, of Winnipeg, his brother Jerry, sister-in-law Marie, of Winnipeg, and their family, his brother Jim Diehl, sister-in-law Elsa, of BC, and their family, sister-in-law Moira Nixon, brother-in-law Herb Nixon, of BC, and their family, special friend Pearl Wladyka and her son Gordon Wladyka of Winnipeg, and their family. Tom was predeceased by his wife Muriel Eileen in 1997, his daughter Betty in 1982, his brothers Ken and Ray, his sister Betty in 1928, his parents Thomas in 1951 and Alma (nee McLeod) in 1934. Tom was a kind, compassionate, intelligent, humble, calm, modest, undemanding, sensible, and peaceful person. We thank Pearl Wladyka and Gordon Wladyka for their strong support and friendship. We thank members of the Outlook Club for their friendship. We thank those who visited Tom in the hospital. We thank the staff and volunteers at the Concordia and St. Boniface Hospitals who treated Tom with compassion and kindness. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Tom's Life will take place on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fort Garry United Church, 800 Point Road. A reception will follow in the church. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the charity of your choice.
