MARIA BOYECHKO (published on August 08, 2009)

MARIA BOYECHKO On Thursday August 6, 2009 at the age of 72 years, Maria was finally reunited on the fairways with her beloved husband Alexander. She fought her battle with cancer with courage and dignity, winning in the end, finding peace. She joins in eternal rest, her parents Michael and Theodosia Cherwak (nee Shewchyshyn). Maria's faith in God and the support of her family and good friends provided strength throughout her struggle. Left to mourn is her only son Zenon (Melissa) and grandchildren Grace and Roman. Maria was born January 4, 1937 in the village of Bartniki, Ukraine. She came to Canada at the age of four and lived with her family in the area of Touts Aides, Manitoba. Maria married her sweetheart Alex in June 1958 and moved to Winnipeg. Maria worked in the printing industry for many years before joining Alex at Roblin Choice Meats. Together they enjoyed many travels around the world, with a particular love for winters in Hawaii and Arizona. She also loved touring the world each year at Folklorama. Maria spent many years celebrating her faith singing in the choir at Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church. In her later years she regularly attended St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church. Maria took great pride in her family, especially her grandchildren. She treasured her time spent with her special visitors, Grace and Roman. After the loss of her husband, Maria reluctantly moved to Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence. She quickly made friends among her new neighbours and her adventures with The Red Hat Society began. From her new home Maria enjoyed many trips (especially mystery tours) to various destinations in the province. Thank you to the staff at Riverview Health Centre for their kindness and compassion. Sincere thanks are extended to third floor nurse Alina for her kind care and support. Special thanks to Homecare nurse Louise Dansereau for her compassionate care and friendship during Maria's arduous journey. Thank you to Mark Shepard of Palliative Care Manitoba for his continued support. Thanks to the staff of Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence for their support, respect and understanding. Thank you to Merv Fitz for his patience and for going above and beyond'. Parastas (prayers) will be sung on Tuesday, August 11 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt Street. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 12 at 10:30 a.m. also at the Church, with Rev. Fr. Ernest Hafichuk officiating. Interment to follow at Thomson in the Park Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
