JOHN ALEXANDER BARNES Dearly beloved John, age 93, died peacefully at Portage General Hospital with family by his side. He is survived by his soulmate and wife of 74 years, Alma, six children; Ken (Lorraine), Willard (Opal), and Marilyn (Gerry) of Portage La Prairie, Don of Victoria, Eleanor (Rick) of Calgary, and William (Carry) of Winnipeg, 15 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by all his siblings, one son Joe in 2006, two grandsons and one great-grandson. Born in Carman, John moved to Portage at an early age and lived in Layland for some years. His younger years were spent hunting, fishing, playing baseball, driving a model-T automobile around the sand hills, and riding railroad jiggers with his father. John grew up with and eventually married his childhood friend Alma on June 13, 1935. Dad served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1943 to 1946 eventually moving back to Portage where he worked for the City until his retirement. Dad's life was a long and full one, with a large, close, and loving family. He loved to laugh, dance, tell stories, and reminisce, watch his beloved Montreal Canadians, and enjoyed his daily walks until the last two months of his life. Walking sometimes twice per day to pick up scratch tickets, he was a constant figure around Portage and loved to talk to his many friends along the way. Dad was a role model and mentor for his children instilling a good work ethic, a generous nature, respect for others, and an enduring love for his family. Dad was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 9 at the Omega Funeral Home in Portage. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 10 at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Portage, followed by a gravesite burial at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 0K8, would be appreciated.
