EDNA LOUISE LAURIE (published on August 08, 2009)

EDNA LOUISE LAURIE August 17, 1920 - August 5, 2009 On the morning of Wednesday, August 5, 2009, two weeks prior to her 89th birthday, Edna Laurie passed away peacefully in her sleep at Park Manor Personal Care Home. She had been in declining health in her closing years. Edna was born in the Anola, MB region to Alice and David Cook. She was the first-born of nine brothers and sisters. Sharing time with her siblings was one of the greatest joys throughout her life. Edna began her work career as an aide in a Jewish orphanage in Winnipeg, later working for the Manitoba Telephone System in Dugald. On September 18, 1943, Edna married Francis Laurie, and together they farmed at Vivian, MB until moving to Transcona in 1948. Mom resumed her work career in the mid 1960s at Eatons and then Canada Safeway from which she retired at age 65 years. Edna loved to camp with her family, first at Falcon Lake and later at Gimli. She took great pride in cultivating a wonderful garden of vegetables and flowers, a passion she held to her closing days. She was a voracious reader, most particularly in history, and enjoyed all types of political debate. She enjoyed bowling and curling, knitting afghans for her family, playing cribbage and whist and, in later years, traveling abroad. From her teenage years she was a member of the United Church of Canada, first at Dugald and later in Transcona. She participated in the governance of the church as member of the Stewardship and Christian Education committees and the Official Board. Edna found strength and friendship in her church community. She sang in the church choirs from 1951, reluctantly leaving this position only in the last two years due to her health. She served as President of the Women's Auxiliary (W.A.), and also the United Church Women (U.C.W.). Edna was a forward-thinking woman with great strength of character. We remember her sense of humour, grace, and devotion to her family. In fact, when recently asked what her greatest achievement was, she responded with being a mother . We have been blessed to know her and to love her. Edna leaves to mourn her children, Richard (Margaret), Vivien (Henry), Cathy (Perry); eight grandchildren, Jeffrey and Gayle Laurie, Elisabeth Saftiuk, Michael and Ryan Koroscil, and through marriage, Jay Kojima (Beth), Dean Kojima (Sharla) and Tad Kojima (Amanda); and six great-grandchildren whom Mom loved as if they were her own. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters, Evelyn Ralston, Marion Laurie, Robert Cook (Gladys), Nolan Cook (Joan), Audrey Roberts (Donald) and Margaret Thomsen (Arthur); and her sisters-in-law, Evon Cook, Ruth Cook, Lee Cook, Bernice Cable, Joan Dick (Jack) and Dorothy Laurie. Edna was predeceased by her beloved husband, Francis; her brothers, Raymond, Carl and Byron Cook; her brothers-in-law, Tom Cable, Ronald Laurie, George Ralston and Lawrence Laurie; and her sisters-in-law, Jo Anne and Hilda Cook. At Mom's request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Edna's life will be held on Monday, August 10 at 11:00 a.m. at the Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Avenue West, Transcona. Interment will follow at Millbrook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Mom's memory to the Transcona Memorial United Church.
