MARY FRANCES ROSE HARMER (published on August 10, 2009)

MARY FRANCES ROSE HARMER August 29, 1920 August 7, 2009 Peacefully, Frances Harmer passed away at the age of 88. She will be deeply missed by her sister Ethel Rainville, son Wallace Roy Piercy and his wife Thelma, son Kevin, long-time companion Bob Wood, friend Lillian George, niece Frankie Milton, great-niece Karen Williams, her neighbors in Transcona for over 50 years, her many friends, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Thomas and Frances (McLeod) Paquette, her sisters Mildred, Irene, Phyllis, Gladys, Margaret and Helen, brothers Ivan, Walter and Tommy, first husband, Wally Piercy, and second husband, John Bernard Harmer. Frances worked for many years in the luggage department of The Bay, and later became an avid square-dancer and seasoned traveler. She was a member of the Goldeyes chapter of the Good Sam Trailer Club, and wintered in Florida, Texas, Arizona and California. She also explored Mexico, Fiji, England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand, and even bravely went to India at the age of 75, surviving on tomato soup and toast for weeks on end. Frances was a generous supporter of the Siloam Mission, the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and the Canadian Cancer Society, and sponsored children in Africa, India and Guatemala. She will be remembered fondly for her sense of humour, generosity, and positive outlook, her many craft projects, her keen fashion sense, and her lovely gardens. In accordance with her request, cremation has taken place, and there will be no service. A gathering will be held at a later date. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the staff of N1 South and N3 East of the Concordia Hospital for their warmth and compassionate care. Those wanting to receive a slideshow of her life can forward their email address to Kevin at indra@mts.net. In lieu of flowers, those who desire can donate to one of the charities mentioned above, or can send a check to Kevin Harmer to help educate the children of Guatemala.
