MERCIL CORKAL (published on August 25, 2009)

MERCIL CORKAL It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Mercil Corkal, on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, after a brief but valiant struggle with cancer. Mercil is predeceased by his parents Rose and Joseph Corkal. Remaining to forever cherish his memory are his wife Elizabeth Corkal (Bjornsson); son Darrell (Patty), son Darcy (Brenda) and daughter Kim (Kevin) Toews; grandchildren Vanessa, Jonathan, Andrew, Ryan, Nicole, Christopher, Travis; brother Bob (Maureen) and numerous nieces and nephews. Merc was born in Fraserwood, Manitoba on September 11, 1933. He graduated from Teulon High School (Governor General Award), and in 1956 the University of Manitoba (Civil Engineering). His career with Manitoba Highways involved many moves, adventures and challenges and led to many enduring friendships. He managed districts in Swan River, Brandon, The Pas, Dauphin, and Portage la Prairie, retiring in 1995. Merc took great pride in his career, always guided by his integrity and professionalism. Merc married the love of his life, Elizabeth, in 1957 and together they raised their children, instilling in them his strong sense of ethics and determination. He was a beacon of strength, dedicated to family, church and community service. To the end he was an avid fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota Street (Paddington at Southglen). In memory of Merc donations may be made to Cancer Care or Faith Lutheran Church. The family gratefully thanks the staff of Victoria General Hospital, fifth floor, for their care and compassion. 843 Sherbrook Street 774-7474 Condolences:
