JOHN LANIUK (published on September 26, 2009)

JOHN LANIUK 1927 - 2009 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather John Laniuk on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the Concordia Hospital after a brief illness. He will be lovingly remembered by his family and many friends. John is survived by his wife of 61 years Verna; sons, Wayne (Katriina) and Brian (Laurel); grandchildren, Kristina, Corey and Justin, great-granddaughter Nicola, sister Doris and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Katherine Laniuk; brothers, Matt, Steve, and Bill and sisters, Mary, Effie, Bella, Katie, Lorna and Ann. John was born in Winthrop, Saskatchewan, the youngest of 11 children. He and Verna moved to Winnipeg following their marriage in 1948. John worked at Eaton's and was resident manager at Sussex House for eight years. An entrepreneur at heart, he also owned numerous businesses including Ben's Groceries, the New Dutch Mill Restaurant and the Interlake Motel and Restaurant in Ashern, Manitoba. John was proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed time with his family. He was also a dedicated member of the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Transcona and spent many hours volunteering his time, especially singing in the choir. Through John's love of people and life, he made many friends and from his humble beginnings; he made all of us proud to have known and loved him and had him in our life to share his joy and leadership. The family would like to thank the staff at the Concordia Hospital ICU for their care and compassion. Prayers will be on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1500 Day Street. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Church, Father Bill Wasyliw officiating. Interment to follow at Transcona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in John's memory to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of one's choice.
