CARL CHARLES CIASTKO (published on September 26, 2009)

CARL CHARLES CIASTKO Peacefully on Sunday, September 20, 2009, Carl passed away at the age of 92 years at the Deer Lodge Centre. Carl will be fondly remembered by his children, Dr. Allen (Val), Norman, Carol (Michael McCurdy), and Lisa (Mark Johnston); grandchildren, Martin (Mandy), Hayley and Lindsay; nieces, nephews and first and second cousins in Canada and the United States. He was predeceased by his wife Ida in 2004 (married 63 years), his parents and siblings. Carl was born on December 7, 1916, son of Polish and Ukrainian immigrant parents, Joseph and Katherine (Senko) Ciastko of Meleb, MB. He received his education in Meleb and Fraserwood, MB. In 1941 he met and married Ida Logan and has resided in Winnipeg since that time. Carl was a longtime member of Robertson Memorial United Church and Immanuel United Church. Dad was proud of his 40 year career with Canadian Pacific Railway, retiring in 1979. He was well known for his love of motors and could always be found under the hood of a car. For many years, neighbours, friends and relatives could drop-in to have their vehicle repaired, often invited for lunch and a visit with Mom and Dad afterward. In addition to Dad's passion for cars, he enjoyed entertaining friends, weekly card games and Saturday night dances. Dad and Mom had fond memories of their many road trips around North America. Often, on the road for six weeks, they would be travelling without a map; just to see where the road would lead them. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service for Carl, which will be held on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. in the Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie Street. A heartfelt thank you to the staff of Lodge 7 at Deer Lodge Centre for taking special care of our Dad. Donations in Carl's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba Inc., Unit 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2.
