ALISTAIR (AL) BUCHANAN January 5, 1929 September 25,, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alistair (Al) Buchanan on September 25, 2009, at the age of 80 years. Al leaves to mourn his wife of 57 years, Hazel (nee Porter) Buchanan, his three sons and daughter, James Buchanan (Arlene), Berna Walichnowski (George), Douglas (Ann) and Albert Buchanan (Josephine); grandchildren Ryan (Lachelle) Buchanan, Ashley (Erik) Butenschon, Robert, Jennifer and Kathryn Walichnowski, Jason Buchanan and Alexander Buchanan and great-granddaughter Sophie Buchanan. Al is survived by his sisters Ruth Brockest and Lilias Stewart and sisters-in-law Berna Buchanan, Alice Hastings, Mary Juras, Joan (Harold) Penner, Manda Porter and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Alec and Helen Buchanan, by his brother Neil Buchanan and by his brothers-in-law Roy Brockest, Jim Hastings, Edward Juras, Bud Porter, and William Stewart. Al was born and lived his entire life in Winnipeg; mostly in Riverview. He retired after 33 years with the Manitoba Telephone System (MTS) as an Electrical Engineer (P.Eng.) and was a member of the MTS Pioneers. He enjoyed curling and bridge at the Fort Rouge Curling Club. He was an elder at Riverview United church, sung in the Choir and was a cub leader and was later a member of Churchill Park United. He was also a long standing member of the St. Andrew's Society. A celebration of his life will be held at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Avenue, Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. with refreshments to follow in the church hall.
