JACK GERLACH (published on September 30, 2009)

JACK GERLACH July 25, 1921 - September 27, 2009 Jack Gerlach passed away on September 27, 2009 at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family. Jack will be dearly missed by his daughters, Judy Swan (Charlie), Susan Gerlach (David Zinger), and Valerie Shaw (Jim); and son John Douglas Gerlach (Susan); his ten grandchildren: Stephen (Sarah), David (Maria), James, Jack, Katharine, Luke, Daniel, Kyle, Samuel, and Madeline. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty; his sister, Marie; and his brother, Hank. Jack was born in Hallonquist, SK in 1921 on the family's homestead. The family moved to Winnipeg where Jack graduated from the Manitoba Commercial College at the age of 18. In 1940, Jack joined the army and shortly thereafter became an Instructor and an award-winning member of the shooting team. He served in the military until 1946 and then worked in the automotive business until his retirement in 1986. Jack was an active and engaged community member. He was a member and Past President of the Kiwanis Club of East Kildonan, a member of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts and the YMCA, and a volunteer for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Jack met his beloved wife, Betty, in 1947 and they were happily married for 50 years. Jack's family was the centre of his life, his legacy, and his greatest joy. He was an energetic and fun-loving father and grandfather and often the oldest kid in the room! He loved family gatherings and enjoyed regaling all with stories of his own adventures and those of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed travelling and loved gardening. He and Betty also had a very special place in their hearts for camping at Big Whiteshell Lake. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Susan Hauch and the staff of the Family Medical Centre for their compassionate care and support. Sincere thanks to Dr. Cavett and the very special staff on Units 6A and 5E of St. Boniface Hospital. We also thank the caring staff and friends at Kildonan House. A memorial service to celebrate Jack's life will take place at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy. on Thursday, October 1 at 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to: KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson Hwy. 338-0331 Send expressions of sympathy at www.dignitymemorial.com/3752
