ELLEN CHOCHINOV (published on October 03, 2009)

ELLEN CHOCHINOV The family of Ellen Chochinov is sad to announce her death on September 25, 2009. She is survived by her parents, Dave and Shirley Chochinov; brother Harvey (Michelle); sister Brenda-Lee Ryant (Howard); nieces, Lauren and Rachel Chochinov; and nephews, Bradley and Jeremy Ryant. Ellen was born in 1954. While cerebral palsy affected her life in many ways, she worked hard not to let it define her. Her strength, feistiness and love shaped her and those who knew her. Ellen loved so many things. She loved people, being with her family and cherished the times spent with her many cousins, the aunties and uncles, nieces and nephews. She had many wonderful friends, including Cassandra, Cindy and her soulmate, Barb Wilkes. Ellen attended Ellen Douglas School, graduated from Grant Park High School and took many courses throughout her adult life. Reading and movies were a passion, as was the beloved family cottage at Winnipeg Beach. Ellen was a strong advocate for her independence and took every opportunity to promote resources for persons with disabilities. We are grateful for the many people who were part of Ellen's care team; in particular her family doctor of 23 years, David Ross, the entire staff at the Kildonan Medical Centre, the staff at Qu'Appelle and 125 Carriage Road. A special thanks to staff at Seven Oaks Hospital, particularly 5 U4 and 3 U5. Funeral services were held on September 27 at Etz Chayim Synagogue. Pallbearers included Michael Usiskin, Alan Lacovetsky, Sandy and Barry Chochinov and Bradley and Jeremy Ryant. Ellen's life taught us that people come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with a range of abilities and gifts; yet, each is human, each unique and precious in their own way. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to SMD: Wheelchair Services, 825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5 or a charity of your choice.
