DR. ARNOLD HARVEY PAULSON (published on October 24, 2009)

DR. ARNOLD HARVEY PAULSON Dr. Arnold H. Paulson, Veterinarian, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009 at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was 88 years old. Arnold was born in Wilmar, Saskatchewan on July 27, 1921, a twin brother to Lloyd and brother to Vera. He grew up in Moosehorn, Manitoba. Arnold enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served in the Merchant Marine during the Second World War. Arnold graduated from Guelph University with a Veterinary Science Degree in 1949. After graduation he established a veterinary practice which later became the Welland Animal Hospital. Throughout the years he was affectionately known as Doc to those he worked with and served. Doc was a gift to his community, caring for all animals both large and small. In 1978 at the close of his working career Doc increased his involvement with the Welland and District Humane Society serving as a consulting veterinarian. He was a member of the Board of Directors, holding the office of President from 2000 to 2007. In 2001, to honour Doc, the Welland and District Humane Society Building was named the Dr. A. H. Paulson Animal Shelter. Doc's vision became a reality. In 2004, Dr. Paulson was presented with a plaque from the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for 50 years of dedication to the shelter. Throughout his career Doc was a healer. Those who knew Doc remember his wisdom, compassion, dedication, integrity and love of all creatures. Doc was both a teacher and role model to those who required guidance in understanding the needs of their animals. On the other hand, when necessary he could be very firm and focused when it came to the well being of his patients . Had it not been for Doc and his advocacy for animals, many people would not have taken a chance and offered their home to a dog or a cat who was in need of care. These same people discovered that they now had a wonderful companion. Doc was totally devoted to helping animals. He was an amazing man. Doc moved back to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2007 to be with his family. Arnold leaves four nephews, Larry Paulson, Bill Paulson, David Simpson, Don Simpson and a niece, Janice McCaine (nee Paulson) as well as Clare Simpson (widow of nephew Allan Simpson) and their respective families to mourn his passing. The family wishes to thank the staff at Deer Lodge who took a special interest in Arnold and ensured his stay was comfortable. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will take place at a later date at Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 0R3
