ALICE ELLEN EMMA BLEAKNEY (published on October 24, 2009)

ALICE ELLEN EMMA BLEAKNEY (nee MILLER) January 10, 1916 - October 15, 2009 If you asked her, Mum would have said she lived a charmed life, at least for 50 years. Born in Ft. William, the baby of a large, boisterous and musically gifted family, she was adored by her parents and four older siblings. Due to her mass of naturally curly hair she was known as Fuzz. The family moved to Fort Rouge where she enjoyed an idyllic youth with each summer spent swimming Armstrong Lake in Redditt. After graduating Grade 12!! she worked as a crackerjack comptometer operator for some years. In 1947 she met her beloved Jack at Park Alleys. They were a great match. They married in 1949 and moved to East Kildonan where they raised their two children and enjoyed two decades of neighbourly camaraderie. Mum and Dad were very sports-minded and in the early fifties they became founding members of Rossmere Golf and Country Club. They could frequently be seen pedaling their bikes with golf bags slung over their shoulders to play a few holes and then put hammer to nails on the garage-sized shed that was the first clubhouse. They both curled as well and held season tickets to the Bomber games and followed NHL hockey with equal enthusiasm. Sadly, Jack predeceased her in 1969 and for Mum life was never the same. She carried on gamely until macular degeneration robbed her of the ability to read and do puzzles, two of her favourite pastimes. Mum was an amazing lady, gracious, smart, capable, independent and loving. She was a wonderful role model and we shall miss her. Mum's memory will be cherished by her daughter Daphne (Bryan) Shore and their children Jennifer (Jason) Novak and Tyler Shore (Samantha) and by her son Dean Bleakney (the late Shirley) and their children David (Ashley) and Sharon. She will also be missed by her seven great-grandchildren Dylan, Samantha, Matthew and Dany Novak, Tristan and Evan Shore and Jordan Bleakney as well as her niece Sharon Flanagan in BC and nephew Mike Miller in NB. Alice was predeceased by her husband Jack Bleakney, her parents David and Mary Ann Miller, her brothers Austin, Davy and Clifford and her sister Glady and more recently Dean's wife Shirley. Our thanks to Park Manor's 2nd floor staff for the excellent care they gave Mum and for brightening her days. Mum......We were so lucky that Dad picked you to be our mother! Not flesh of my flesh not bone of my bone but still miraculously my own. Always remember you didn't grow under my heart but in it. As Mum wished, there will be no service.
