SIDNEY EASTCHAK (published on October 24, 2009)

SIDNEY EASTCHAK March 7, 1916 - October 20, 2009 With heavy hearts, the family announces the peaceful passing of Sidney Eastchak, beloved husband, father and Papa. He leaves to mourn, daughters, Cindy (Mickey) Davies, Debbie (Zenon) Bodnar and granddaughters, Melyssa and Lisa Davies. He is predeceased by his wife of 62 years Nellie (2008) and parents, John and Ksenia as well as step-siblings, Rosie, Mike, Nettie, Mary, Nick and Andrew. Sid lived all his life in Melrose on the family farm, moving to Oakbank with the Davies family in November 2008. At the age of 15 he hopped the rail cars looking for work to support his family. He worked in logging camps and worked on the Trans Canada Highway. He eventually became a carpenter by trade as well as working the farm. Winters were a time to gather with family and friends and play canasta. Mom and Dad loved to garden and Sid especially doted on his potato plants handpicking the potato bugs off the plants. He was always willing to lend a hand with his carpentry skills. You could not take Sid anywhere without bumping into someone he knew or worked with. He always had a stash of chocolate bars or ice cream to treat children when they visited. Sid adored his family and when his health failed they all tenderly cared for him. Special thanks to Dr. Elbardisy and the staff at Selkirk Hospital for their compassionate care. At Sid's request cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will take place at St. Michael's Roman Catholic Cemetery in Cooks Creek, with Father Martin Bradbury officiating. In his last years Dad was not able to get out much but he enjoyed the phone calls and visits from family and friends. In lieu of flowers we encourage you to take the time to call or visit a friend to brighten their day.
