GERTRUDE (PARKINSON) MINTON (published on December 16, 2009)

GERTRUDE (PARKINSON) MINTON Peacefully on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at the Whitemouth Personal Care Home, Gertrude Leonora Irene Minton, beloved wife of the late R. J. (John) Minton, passed away. Born January 31, 1912, Gertrude was the last surviving member of Joseph and Martha Parkinson's family, pioneer settlers in the rural municipality of Roland, MB. Gertrude received her early education at Badger School and Roland High School. The family was always active in church and community affairs which included an interest in the Boys and Girls Club. During this period Gertrude was the recipient of two Provincial Gold Medals for public speaking. In 1927 the family moved to Winnipeg and there Gertrude completed her education at St. James Collegiate followed by a Secretarial course. In 1940 she and John were married and that was the beginning of 24 happy years in Bissett. Church and community work took up the young couple's life broken only by John's service in the Armed Forces. In 1964 John and Gertrude moved to Pinawa and in 1971 she brushed up her business skills and became an employee of Atomic Energy of Canada. Unfortunately ill health forced early retirement but her continued association with the Pinawa Craft Club was a source of much enjoyment. At age 92 she moved to the Whitemouth Personal Care Home where she made many new friends while still treasuring friendships she had made throughout her lifetime. Mom will be greatly missed by her daughter Eleanor Stardom, grandsons John (Holly) and Murray (Kathy) Stardom and great-grandsons Max and Leo. She is also survived by nieces Joyce Rich and Cherry White, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her brothers Osborne and Boyd and sisters Ethel and Ruby Parkinson. The family wishes to thank Dr. Opie for his many years of caring, Gertrude's Home Care Staff and the many friends and neighbors who made it possible for her to lead an active and independent life in Pinawa. Sincere thanks to the staff at the Whitemouth Personal Care Home and to Dr. Spence for their care and kindness. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the Pinawa Lutheran Church, 25 Massey Avenue, Pinawa, MB with Rev. Robert Murray officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, The Canadian Diabetes Association or to a Charity of One's Choice. I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the way Of happy times and laughing times and bright sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun Of happy memories that I leave when life is done. SOBERING FUNERAL CHAPEL CREMATORIUM, Beausejour 268-3510 or MB Toll Free 1-877-776-2220
