GERTRUDE LILLIAN RASMUSSEN (published on December 19, 2009)

GERTRUDE LILLIAN RASMUSSEN (nee STEWART) (SCOTTY) Peacefully, on December 17, 2009, in the radiant warmth of the morning sun, Mom died quietly and with dignity at Foyer Valade. Her family were at her side as she left this life for the next. Mom was born on June 7, 1918, in Grande Pointe, Manitoba to Marie Catherine (Villebrun) and Charles Stewart. She spent her childhood and school years in Woodridge, LaBroquerie and St. Norbert. Mom fell in love with and married her soldier boy - our dad (Hans Otto Rasmussen) on March 31, 1942. He fondly nicknamed her Scotty and she called him Butch ... these loving nicknames were with them until they died... Mom and Dad raised five children - through very difficult times. She was a faith-filled woman and believed fiercely in her heart that God would provide what her family needed... come what may. Her family and her faith were her reasons for living. She was blessed with six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mom freely volunteered her time and gifts to anyone in need - from pinching perogies to teaching Sunday school, to singing in church choirs, working at church bazaars and fall suppers, working at church bingos - you could count on her. She also enjoyed many hours working in her flower gardens, with her bichons at her side. Mom will be sadly missed by her son Ken (Joanne), daughter Dianne (Paul), her daughters-in-law Diana and Nancy. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kisha, Myles (Crystal), Mark (Sabrina), Justin (Renee), Jason (Leanne), Benett (Tara) and her great-granddaughter Seattle-Anne. She leaves to mourn her passing, her sister Dot, her sisters-in-law Joyce Stewart, Sigrid Paulsen, Carla Cross and Vera Osborne. Mom was predeceased by her husband Hans Otto and her children Ed, Elaine and Gord, as well as her daughters-in-law Lorraine and Betty. Her mother and father, as well as her sisters Cecile, Sarah, Marie and her brothers Charles, Albert, George and Andrew have died previously. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2009, with viewing beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Christ The King Parish at 847 St. Mary's Road in St. Vital. Her pallbearers will be her grandsons Myles, Mark, Justin, Jason, Benett Rasmussen and her adopted son Bill Turner. Immediately following the mass, she will be buried beside our dad at Green Acres Cemetery on Hwy # 1 East. The family invites you to join them, in the Heritage Room at Green Acres Funeral Home, after her burial. Although mom dearly loved them, flowers are gratefully declined. Should you choose, donations may be made in her memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3 or the Alzheimer's Association of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. We wish at this time to express our deepest appreciation to the staff in l'Unite Marguerite at Foyer Valade for their tender and compassionate care of our mom during her last days. We cannot thank you enough. A special thank you to Nicole, Suzanne and Ryan.
