VICTOR GMITEREK September 11, 1919 - December 16, 2009 With heartfelt sadness, the family announces the passing of Victor Gmiterek at the Victoria General Hospital at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday December 16, 2009. He was 90 years of age. Victor was the third oldest of 11 children. He was predeceased by his wife Ann, brothers, Alfred, Joe and Peter and sisters, Helen, Carrie and Mary. He is survived by his sisters, Irene and Alice, his brothers, Edward and John and many nieces and nephews. Victor was born on the family farm at Cloverleaf, Manitoba. He joined the military (Army) as a young man, serving during the war from 1939 to 1945 in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Upon discharge at the end of the war, Victor returned to Winnipeg. At that time he met and married Ann Sowchuk the love of his life. They took up residence in St. Norbert, Manitoba during which Victor began working as a carpenter in the construction of the dams at McArthur Falls and Pine Falls. Several years later, Victor and Ann owned and operated a chip shop in St. Norbert. Although the shop was sold, they remained in St. Norbert and Victor returned to carpentry with the firm of Fugi Construction until his retirement at age 65 at which time they moved into an apartment in the city. Throughout his life Victor loved to work with wood and also with steel, as he was an accomplished blacksmith. His love of sports, gardening and the outdoors were some of his many interests. He was a kind man, loved to laugh and never seemed to take life too seriously. We will surely miss him. At his request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service with family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
