ALLAN GRAY (published on December 30, 2009)

ALLAN GRAY April 29, 1935 - December 23, 2009 Allan Gray, dearly beloved husband of Beverly Harris, passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, holding Bev's hand in his. Left to cherish his memory and mourn his passing are his loving wife Bev (nee Brough), his sister Pat Robertson (Calgary), his son Paul Sullivan (Winnipeg), his daughter Pamela Brown (Lac du Bonnet), mother-in-law Pearl Brough (Flin Flon), in-laws Corinne and Bill Gamble (Selkirk), Bob and Debbie Brough (Flin Flon), Mel and DonnaLee Brough (St. Albert), Ken and Janice Brough (Flin Flon), and Ken and Doreen Jones (East St. Paul), many nieces and nephews, especially Bev's godchildren Tracey and Bryan Gamble. He is also survived by his grandchildren Andrew and Sarah Brown and Shane St. Germain. He was predeceased by his parents Lillian and Edward Gray, siblings Winnie, Stan, Gordon, Eleanore and Bob, son Keith, daughter Kelly Ann, father-in-law Lawrence Brough, nephew Bill Gamble and sister-in-law Rita Overland. Allan was born and raised in Winnipeg and attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces at an early age and was proud to serve our country for 32 years with postings in Rivers, Shilo, Kingston, Oromocto and Winnipeg. He retired from active duty in 1987 and returned to Air Command as a member of the Reserves. Allan died as he lived, with dignity and grace. He was much loved by family and friends and respected by all who met him. Those who knew him best realized how frail his health had become these past few years. He fought the good fight for as long as he was able, and Bev feels blessed that they were able to celebrate their 25th anniversary in May of this year. In the end, his heart could not go on and he quietly slipped away. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially long-time friends Wim and Bea Janssen of The Netherlands. Allan was a gifted athlete who excelled at many sports. He was a dedicated volunteer, and many organizations benefited from his leadership skills. He was a Past President of the Charleswood Golf Club, the Cardinals Swim Club, and Manitoba Broomball Association; he was an Honourary Past President of C.F.B. Curling Club and Honourary Life Member of the Manitoba Curling Association. He is best known locally for his activities with the M.G.A. (now Golf Manitoba) and the M.C.A., serving both organizations for over 30 years, primarily as a Rules Official par excellence and Drawmaster of the annual M.C.A. Bonspiel. Bev would like to thank the staff at the Victoria ER and 5th Floor North for their care and compassion during Allan's final days. She would also like to acknowledge the excellent care Allan received over the years at the Grace, Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface and Misericordia Hospitals as well as the many life-saving efforts of the Winnipeg Fire Department and Paramedics. We were truly blessed with wonderful health-care professionals. A celebration of Allan's life will be held at Deer Lodge Curling Club on Monday, January 4, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, should friends desire, donations in Allan's memory may be made to Grace Hospice, c/o Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7, or Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation or CNIB (Manitoba Branch) or Parkinson's Society or other favourite charity.
