MELVIN ALBERT MORRISON (published on January 04, 2010)

MELVIN ALBERT MORRISON Born February 2, 1918. We are sad to announce that Mel passed away in his home on December 31, 2009 at the age of 91. Son of Joseph and Violet (Brown) Morrison. Loving husband to Mabel (Duncan) Morrison, father to Brian and Glenn and grandfather to Corey and Kevin. Beloved father-in-law and friend to Lynette (Lazarick) Morrison and Sonja Krickhan. Mel's grandparents, James and Martha Morrison, came from Ireland and settled in the Carman area in 1878. Mel lived his whole life in Carman and the Graysville area and thought this was the best place in the world. His favourite part of any vacation was the sight of the Carman water tower, coming home. He helped his Dad run the Massey Harris dealership in Carman during the 1930s and then enlisted and served as a Medical Assistant at MacDonald Air Force Base during the Second World War. His career after that was varied and interesting. He delivered bread with a horse and wagon in Port Arthur, did bee-keeping with his father-in-law, delivered coal for the Carman Co-op and fuel oil for BA. He was a volunteer fireman. He built his own mink ranch in the 1950s. But his real career, and the one he was most proud of, was managing the Carman Water Treatment plant from its start to when he retired after 20 years in 1962. He learned chemistry, piping and everything else needed to ensure that Carman had a constant supply of clean safe water. He reluctantly took up golf after retirement but found he enjoyed it, probably the camaraderie as much as the golf, and culminated his career with a hole-in-one to go along with his two curling 8-enders and his three 29 crib hands. Mel loved people. He cared deeply, acted generously and spoke kindly. He also loved animals, and no bird or squirrel near his home went hungry. He was a proud member and tireless worker for the Canadian Legion for 64 years, and was there for Remembrance Day ceremonies every year except the last when his failing health prevented it. Mel's family want to give their deepest thanks to Carman Home Care Services, Carman Medical Group, Carman Memorial Hospital, the Boyne Lodge, Carman United Church, the Legion, Veteran's Affairs, Doyle's Funeral Chapel and his many friends and neighbours who cared for him and helped celebrate his life. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mel's memory to Carman Handi Van and Carman Hospital Palliative Care would be appreciated. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Carman United Church, with Rev. Harold Kenyon officiating. Interment will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery, Carman. Doyle's Funeral Home in care of arrangements. www.doyleschapels.com
