CAROL JOAN PENNER (published on January 07, 2010)

CAROL JOAN PENNER With Al and her two boys at her side, Carol Penner (nee Erickson) of Sioux Narrows passed away peacefully on January 5, 2010 at Lake of the Woods District Hospital in Kenora. She fought ovarian cancer courageously, and held on to enjoy a final white Christmas together with all the family on her 70th birthday. She is survived by her husband of 49 and one-half years, Alan and her sons Todd (Bev) and Kurt (Rose), as well as four grandchildren, Drew, Melissa, Rebecca, and Terry. She also leaves to mourn her sisters Elaine and June and brothers Sam (Barb) and Kenny. She was predeceased by her father Joe Erickson, her mother Mabel (nee Carter) and her stepmother Betty. She rejoiced that she would be able to join her daughter Lisa at Jesus' side, since Lisa went to be with the Lord in 1972 at six years of age. Carol was born in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, and grew up a farm girl near Deer Park. She attended high school in Amery and had recently enjoyed reunions with her friends from childhood. After meeting Alan at Bethel University in Minneapolis, they married and both became teachers. Ultimately they would move to Canada, settling in Ear Falls, then Dryden, and finally Sioux Narrows where they owned and operated Penner Contracting. She absolutely loved Lake of the Woods, especially Whitefish Bay where they began summers here in 1963. As friends and family were precious to her, she loved to share the lake with them on the houseboat Al had built. She loved flowers and the many beauties of nature. Most of all, she loved Jesus her Saviour, getting actively involved in her church by playing piano among many other contributions. Carol accompanied many musicians and groups over the years, in every community and phase of her life. She continued to be very involved in their Florida retirement community -- in music, church, computer group, and the golf groups as well. A celebration of Carol's life, and of the triumph of Christ over death, will be held at Lake of the Woods Chapel in Sioux Narrows at 1:00 p.m., Saturday January 9. Prior to the service there will be a viewing from 11:00 to 12:45 , and there will be a reception following the service at the Sioux Narrows Community Hall. Pallbearers will be Terry Penner, Graham Penner, Burton Penner, Woody Linton, Doug Reid and Jerry Fugate. Interment will take place in the coming summer. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lake of the Woods Chapel (Sioux Narrows), Barnabas Family Ministries (P.O. Box 309, Gibsons, BC, V0N 1V0), or Young Life Canada (120, 9440 - 202 St., Langley, BC, V1M 4A6) would be greatly appreciated by the family. BROWN FUNERAL HOME CREMATION CENTRE ENTRUSTED WITH ARRANGEMENTS.
