DR. SAMUEL KENNETH KEMKARAN (published on January 11, 2010)

DR. SAMUEL KENNETH KEMKARAN August 20, 1925 - January 5, 2010 Peacefully, at home, surrounded by his family Dr. Samuel Kemkaran passed away. Samuel was born in the village of San Fernando, Trinidad, West Indies, August 20, 1925. He immigrated to Canada in 1952 and attended United College. He attended University of Manitoba and graduated from the faculty of Medicine in 1958. He obtained a fellowship in Radiology in 1970. He practiced rurally in Portage La Prairie, Ste. Rose du Lac, and Strathclair, Manitoba. He also practiced in Toronto, Ontario and Winnipeg. He treasured his time as a general practitioner as well as a diagnostic consultant as a radiologist. Throughout his career he served many people and felt immense satisfaction from his role as a care giver and doctor. Samuel met Florence Esther Cook at Young United Church and they married in 1956. They were married for 53 years and lived life together to the fullest. Flo proved to be Sam's biggest challenge! They have two children, Heather (Ross) and Kenneth. Sam was also blessed with four grandchildren, Sarah, Laura, Joshua and Hunter. Time with his grandchildren provided him with pure and simple joy. Sam is also survived by siblings Sylvia, Lindburg, Joyce, Baldwin, Jeanette and Franklin and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Canada and the United Kingdom. Sam was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Hannah, his brother Sampson and his nieces Sandra and Karen. To his family, Sam was a driven, compassionate and dedicated man who served as an example and role model in whatever he pursued. His tenacious spirit took him places that would seem impossible to others. Sam had maintained close ties with his friends from Trinidad who represented to him a second family. His relationship with them allowed him to stay in touch with his beginnings. He loved the annual Trinidad Pool Party which afforded him an opportunity to let loose Trinidad style . He was also very passionate in his involvement with the Transcona Rotary Club during his working years. Sam had been in gradual decline for the last ten years of his life. Fortunately he met a peaceful end with his family at his side. He fought hard up until the last moments of life. As with all challenges he met in his life he never gave up. The family would like to express their thanks to Sam's dedicated home care workers, Martino the Chief , Carmen, Honor, Josie, Freddy, Olga, and Melody. They also would like to express their gratitude for the services of Marilyn Gapuz. You all were fantastic to Sam and maintained the best possible quality of life for him in all your years of service. Also, the family would like to express their gratitude for the help they received from Dr. Jon Mohamdee and Dr. Renate Singh. Your efforts will always be remembered. We will miss our gentle, wise and loving husband, father and grandfather. A memorial service is to be held at 1:00 p.m. January 14, 2010 at Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Rev. Clark Saunders officiating. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westworth United Church Memorial Foundation.
