MARY ASHWOOD CARSTENS (published on January 16, 2010)

MARY ASHWOOD CARSTENS (nee SUTTON) Peacefully at St. Norbert Personal Care Home on January 11, 2010. Mary is survived by her daughter Clarice and son-in-law Patrick Matthews of Winnipeg; grandsons, Brian (Kelly) and Richard (Lisa); and great-grandchildren, Samuel and Sara of Calgary; sister Dorothy Irwin; and sister-in-law Helen Sutton of Stonewall. She was predeceased by her husband John and brother Jack Sutton. Mary was born December 14, 1913 to Dan and Clarice Sutton and raised on the family farm at Warren, MB where she was happiest working in the fields with her father. She maintained a life-long interest in gardening and agriculture and had a special affection for horses. As a young woman, Mary moved to Winnipeg. She married John Carstens in 1940 and lived most of her life in the Riverview area. She worked several years for the internal security department of the T Eaton Co. She was made a life member of the Craft Guild of Manitoba where she volunteered in the shop, taught macramé and managed the purchase and sales of Inuit art. Mary was adept at many crafts. She made tooled leather purses and deerskin gloves. A skilled seamstress, she created everything from wedding gowns, quilts and pj's for all the cousins to fur-lined appliquéd parkas. Until her arthritis became too painful, she seldom sat without knitting needles or a crochet hook. She was a perfectionist in all she undertook. Family and friends benefited from Mary's handiwork. Thanks to the caring staff at St. Norbert Personal Care Home where Mary spent her last three years. There will be no service. Private interment of ashes at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined. In memory of Mary please feed the birds in your yard or make a donation to the horse rescue at Papa's Ranch, P.O. Box 291, Selkirk, MB R1A 2B2 (registered charity). GLEN LAWN FUNERAL HOME 982-7550
