GENEVIEVE DOLL OBRIEN (published on January 18, 2010)

GENEVIEVE DOLL O'BRIEN Genevieve Doll O'Brien, aged 87 years, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2010 at the Lions Personal Care Centre in Winnipeg. Gen, the younger daughter of Thomas Joseph and Luta Genevieve (Doll) was born in Winnipeg on July 19, 1922. She attended Linwood School and St. James Collegiate. Following public school, she entered the Faculty of Home Economics at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1944. A year of internship at the Vancouver General Hospital completed her qualification as a clinical dietitian. Next came a return to Winnipeg, to the beloved neighbourhood that she grew up in and to her professional career. Many happy and fulfilling years were spent in the Dietary Department at Deer Lodge Veterans Hospital very near her long-time home on Overdale Street. Gen worked primarily with diabetic and renal patients. She was a life member of Dietitians of Canada. As a volunteer, Gen spent nine years with the Diabetes Association of Manitoba, working largely with the mothers of children with diabetes. Subsequently, she spent 10 years on the Board of Directors of Meals on Wheels. Genevieve retired in 1980, providing more time to pursue recreational activities and some traveling. Her cultural interests continued with attendance of concerts, theatre, ballet and symphony. One of her most rewarding retirement activities was the auditing of courses in philosophy and comparative religion at the University of Winnipeg. Gen was predeceased by her father Thomas (1971), her mother Genevieve (1962) and her sister Joan (1969). Gen is survived by three first cousins, John Doll, Carol King and David Doll, all of southern Ontario, and many loving friends. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Following interment refreshments will be served at Chapel Lawn.
