RUTH PAULINE PFEIFER (published on January 23, 2010)

RUTH PAULINE PFEIFER Peacefully, on Monday, January 11, 2010, Ruth passed away at the Seven Oaks Hospital, at the age of 91 years. She is survived by her loving niece Linda, great-nieces Jennifer Carmichael in Winnipeg and Melanie Mansfield (Sean) in Houston, Texas, step-daughter Brenda (Frank) Konyn and step-grandchildren Karl (Patti), Karen (Scott) and Kristi (Brad) and their families in Alberta and dear friend Laura Dixon in Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her parents, Gertrude Galer and Jack Clabert and step-father Fred Galer, her loving husband John and her sister Marge Poppele. Ruth was born at Grace Hospital on March 29, 1918 and spent her entire life in Winnipeg. Ruth was working at the Maxwell House Coffee Shop on Broadway when she met the love of her life in 1939, Johnnie . Due to circumstances beyond their control were unable to marry until November 15, 1956. They had 50 years together until John's death in 1989. Ruth worked for many years in the millinery department at the Hudsons Bay Company and had a wonderful collection of hats which can be seen in many of the pictures of her. Ruth and Johnnie loved their many yearly winter vacations in Florida where they collected the many seashells adorning their home and the cottage. She loved the many memorable and happy summers spent at the cottage at Winnipeg Beach with the family, where many enjoyable hours were spent playing Rumoli and cribbage. Ruth was a huge football fan and she and Johnnie enjoyed many years of Blue Bomber games with season tickets and much optimism. She enjoyed her home, cooking and made one of the best chocolate cakes ever. Spending time and caring for her niece Linda almost every weekend when she was growing up brought her much joy, as did babysitting her great-nieces, Jennifer and Melanie. Ruth was able to remain in her home until March 2009 when failing health forced her into the hospital and eventually to live at Holy Family Home since July 2009. All who knew Ruth are aware of her great qualities, her strength, her cheerful sense of humour, her stubbornness, her kind heartedness, her loyalty and protectiveness of her family, especially her three girls . Those of us who were fortunate enough to have her in our lives were very blessed and have wonderful, lasting memories to treasure. Her family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff of St. Mary's Ward at Holy Family Home for their loving care. Thanks also to Dr. Connelly for his medical care; the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital; and to Sister Tina for her spiritual support. Ruth was truly, deeply loved and will be missed always. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 0R3 A memorial service will take place on Monday, January 25, at Neil Bardal Inc., 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 1:00 p.m. NEIL BARDAL INC.
