MICHAEL J. PIERCY (published on January 23, 2010)
MAJOR (RET) MICHAEL J. PIERCY August 24, 1925 - January 18, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, at the age of 84 years on Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Grace Hospital following a brief and unexpected illness. Mike was a true gentleman who will be sadly missed by his wife Thelma; sons Brent, Brian (Ann Sellers); grandchildren Duncan and Isla, as well as their many friends and neighbours. Born on Denman Island, British Columbia, Mike answered his country's call to arms in 1944 at the age of 18, entering the Commonwealth Air Training Program to become a bomb aimer, then re-enlisting after the war and crewing Lancasters on Atlantic submarine patrol. The career he loved in the R.C.A.F. spanned the years 1944 to 1973 and included exciting postings in Washington and California while assigned to NORAD during the height of the Cold War, and ended with assignment to the Air Navigation School at CFB Winnipeg. Along the way he met his wife, Thelma, to whom he was married for 53 years, and raised two loving sons. Following his military service, Mike's second career was as Coordinator of the Canadian Forces University Program at the University of Manitoba where he assisted over 400 service members from around Canada, and around the world, to achieve university degrees. Of this, he was most proud. An intimate celebration of Mike's life will be announced at a later date. We wish to thank the Doctors and staff at the Grace Hospital who provided such wonderful care to Mike in his final days and showed such compassion to family members. May you dance the sky on laughter silvered wings. |
