PAUL HAROLD WESTDAL (published on January 23, 2010)

PAUL HAROLD WESTDAL With sadness, and thankfulness for a long and loving life, the family of Paul Harold Adalsteinn Niel Westdal announces his passing on January 20, 2010. We have lost a gentle man and a gentleman, a loving husband, father and afi. Harold leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Dee Dee, daughters Laureen (Ken) Goodridge and Carol Westdal (Martin McGeough), son Neil (Judy), and grandchildren Neil Goodridge (fiancée Carol Brown), Kate Goodridge, Jake McGeough, Geoff Westdal, and Greg Westdal. He will be fondly remembered by his sisters-in-law Evelyn Westdal and Doris Gillis, and many nieces and nephews, who were all dear to him. Harold was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Helga Westdal, brothers Jack and Swain, and sister Sigga Stefansson. Harold was born November 5, 1921 in Wynyard, SK. With his family, he left the farm in 1940 and moved to Winnipeg. Harold and Dee Dee met and fell in love in Winnipeg in 1945, married in 1947, and celebrated their 62nd anniversary in May 2009. Harold graduated with a B.Sc. in 1946, earned his M.Sc. in 1950, and his Ph.D. in 1969, all from the University of Manitoba. He joined the Dominion Entomological Laboratory in Brandon as an entomologist in 1946, where he worked until 1958, when the lab was transferred to the Canada Agriculture Research Station at the University of Manitoba. After 36 years as a research scientist, Harold retired from Canada Agriculture in 1982. Following his retirement, Harold set up an agricultural consulting business and also farmed with his brother, Jack, near Poplar Point. Harold actively farmed until 1990. Harold was a role model for his children with his passion for language, joy in work, loyalty to family, and in his loving relationship with Dee Dee. Harold had a special relationship with each of his grandchildren. Whether it was loading flax into a truck on the farm, working in the garden, conducting music together, being pushed around in a wheelbarrow, lighting a fire at the cottage, making floods in the back yard, or sitting with Afi in his comfy chair, they were the centre of his universe when he was with them. Harold's love for and commitment to his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family, and his generosity with his time and talents were defining characteristics. His puckish wit and sense of humour remained with him to the end. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Helga Nielson Westdal Memorial Bursary, c/o Financial Aid and Awards, University of Manitoba, or to a charity of your choice. Harold's family will remember his advice, Fardu vardlega (Go carefully). Goda nott, Haraldur, og sofdu rott. NEIL BARDAL INC. (204) 949 2200 nbardal.mb.ca
