MARTHA JEAN (PATTY) GRIMMER Peacefully, on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 Martha passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre, at the age of 86 years. Born on July 31, 1923 Patty was raised in Dalhousie, New Brunswick. From a young age, she valued her independence and making her own decisions. She was strong-willed and determined. A proud veteran of the Second World War, Patty served with the C.W.A.C. and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. She was with the legal branch of the Canadian Armed Forces in Ottawa during the war before being posted overseas. As education was important to Patty she committed herself to life-long learning. Following the war she attended Acadia University and then, the London School of Economics to work on her PhD. Patty worked as a professor of Political Science at the University of New Brunswick and Political Science and Economics at the University of Manitoba, from which she retired early. Never married, Patty was predeceased by sisters, Josephine and Katherine, and is survived by sisters Aleyene Mell and Betty Dimock. Patty enjoyed travelling and spending time with her close friend, Joyce who also predeceased her. She also took pleasure in reading, following current affairs and the stock market. A fan of the Arts, Patty appreciated live music and the ballet. Patty loved new experiences and spent time travelling, having visited many places including Europe. In her younger years, she enjoyed a good steak at Rae and Jerry's. Patty was a progressive woman with a sarcastic and often witty sense of humour. Thank you to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for the care and compassion shown to Patty. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, January 27, at Neil Bardal Inc., 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 1:00 p.m. NEIL BARDAL INC. (204) 949 2200 nbardal.mb.ca
