DOROTHY JANICE MARIE SMITH (published on January 26, 2010)

DOROTHY JANICE MARIE SMITH (nee ALLAN) After a year-long battle with Cancer, Janice passed away with her family at her side on Friday, January 22, 2010, at the Grace Hospice at the age of 72 years. Remaining to forever cherish Janice's memory are her loving husband Glenn of 50 years; sons Paul and Trevor (Loreleen); grandsons Adam, Jackson and Callum; sisters Barbara Lamb, Margaret Woodward (Hartley); brother Harvey Allan (Rita); sisters-in-law Kathy Allan, Roberta Allan, Mabel Spender; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Harry and Margaret (Maggie) of Rathwell; brothers Jack, Walter (Peggy), Jim, Joe; and brother-in-law Jack Lamb. Janice was born January 16, 1938 at the family farm in Rathwell, MB. She went to school in Rathwell up to grade 11, completing grade 12 in Treherne, where she met her future husband, Glenn. They were married in 1959 at the Calvin United Church of Rathwell. Following high school Janice came to Winnipeg to complete her secretarial training at Success Business College. Over the years she worked as a dedicated secretary for a number of businesses, including the CPR, Manitoba Pool, Prudential, St. Boniface Hospital Burrel Lab, and the University of Manitoba, where she worked until retirement. She was a very proud and devoted mother, and was absolutely delighted with the birth of her two sons, Paul and Trevor. She attended all of their swimming, hockey, baseball, soccer, track, and cycling practices and competitions. Their friends were always welcome in her home, and Janice continued to stay in touch with them over the years. Most recently, Janice was thrilled by the arrival of her three grandsons. She developed a special bond with Adam and Jackson, as she and Glenn helped care for them. The birth of Callum, only two months ago, truly brightened her final days. Loyal and generous to her friends and her entire extended family, she gladly opened her home to relatives when they first moved into Winnipeg. Janice loved to have everyone over for meals and picnics, and was always one of the first to make a meal or help out in any way whenever the need was there. Over the years she volunteered for many organizations in her community. Janice had a keen interest in nature and was an avid follower of curling. She also enjoyed bowling, cooking, gardening and travelling. In retirement she and Glenn went to the Maritimes, the Yukon and Alaska, and the UK. A funeral service for Janice will be held on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in The United Church in Meadowood, 1111 Dakota Street, with Rev. Shelly Manley - Tannis, presider. Interment will follow in the St. Vital Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9,
