CONNIE RICE (published on January 29, 2010)

CONNIE RICE (nee AIELLO) Peacefully on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, our beloved mother, grandmother and sister passed away at the Sherbrooke Community Centre, Saskatoon, SK, at the age of 85. Connie was predeceased by her loving husband John Alban Rice Sr. on June 3, 1956, parents John Battista and Maria Francesca Aiello, sister Genie Aiello, brothers-in-law Russell Smuchilla and Bob Nixon, and niece Linda Goodwin. Mom's memory will forever be cherished and remembered by her loving daughter Teresa, dedicated and loving son John, wife Darlene and their children Shawna (Jeff), Lisa (Graham) and Matthew of Martensville, SK. Connie will be sadly missed by her sisters Margaret and Norman Nelson, Phyllis Smuchilla and Diana Nixon. Niece Charlene; nephews John and Don will always remember Auntie Connie's smiling face and that twinkle in her eyes. As well, Connie was so happy to see her great-nieces and nephews. There are sisters-in-law in Ontario and U.S.A. and numerous relatives. Connie was a very special lady. She will be remembered by her many friends. Connie was born in Winnipeg on October 21, 1924, the eldest of five daughters. She attended Riverview and Gordon Bell High Schools and Success Business School. Her first job as a stenographer was with Canadian Pacific Airlines and in 1946 was transferred to Vancouver, BC. Eventually Connie met the Love of her Life - Johnny and they married in June, 1954. Tragically, while working in Northern British Columbia there was a terrible accident which took his life on June 3, 1956. Connie had come to Winnipeg awaiting the birth of their second child - John Alban Jr. was born June 20, 1956. Connie remained in Winnipeg. Within a year, Connie, widowed with two young babies, returned to the work force. She was a dedicated employee of C.P. Rail (Maintenance of Weigh Department) for 29 years. She developed many friendships there which continued long after she retired. Connie enjoyed 20 years of retirement; a great part of that was caring for her family. Her children and grandchildren were the centre of her universe and devoted her life to them. Three years ago Connie's health deteriorated to the point where she couldn't live on her own. The decision was made that Connie should be closer to John and his family. Connie moved into Sherbrooke Community Centre (Saskatoon) and remained there until her passing. John, Darlene and children have been dedicated to Connie completely. Bless You John and Darlene! Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday January 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. with interment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Osborne Street on Monday, February 1 at 11:00 a.m.
