MARGARET CHARLENE EDMONDSON (published on February 02, 2010)

MARGARET CHARLENE EDMONDSON (EDWARDS) May 6, 1933 - January 28, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charlene Edmondson on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Portage General Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Charlene was born in Russell, MB on May 6, 1933. Charlene grew up in Birtle, MB and upon graduating from high school she attended Normal School, becoming a teacher. She returned to Birtle to begin her teaching career. Charlene loved sports. She was an avid softball player, curler and golfer. Swimming was her passion when she was younger, a medal winner at the National Commonwealth Games. It was here in Birtle while teaching, that she met and married the love of her life of 56 years, Douglas. After Charlene and Doug were married they moved to many places, but Portage became their home in 1978. It was here that she made many life-long friends. Charlene loved to travel and enjoyed the many trips that she and Doug took. Charlene and Doug spent many good times escaping the winters in Florida, where they made countless memories. She loved to attend her weekly Wednesday Coffee Club Meetings, walking with her friends, golfing and curling in the ladies league. Charlene was a wonderful mother with a kind and caring heart. She enjoyed watching her children and her grandchildren grow up. Charlene was very proud of each of them and their accomplishments. Mom's apple crisp was a family favourite at all special gatherings. Charlene spent many hours in the ball diamond, soccer pitch, and at the rink cheering and encouraging. She was a person with strength and a strong commitment to her family. Charlene always put her family first before herself and could be counted on for everything. She was a loyal friend, an exceptional wife, and her unconditional love made her a special Mom. Charlene will be sadly missed by all those who knew her. Charlene was predeceased by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. H. L. Edwards, sister Elsie and grandson Daniel Edmondson. Left to mourn and cherish Charlene's memory is her husband Doug, children Deborah, Earl, Leonard (Judy), Darlene (Thomas), Pamela (Parker), 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, brother, sisters, brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and very close friends. A celebration of Charlene's life will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Portage Alliance Church. As expressions of sympathy in Charlene's memory, if friends so desire, contributions may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, c/o 103 Wilkinson Crescent, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1A7 or Sunset Palliative Care Inc., P.O. Box 92, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3A7. Arrangements entrusted to Ronald Moffit Memorial Services Portage la Prairie, MB
